We'll use this post to display noteworthy quotes in the novel, Ruby. The quotes can be from any chapter or page, said by any character in the book. It doesn't matter. Just tell us what words stuck out to you and why? Did they make you laugh? Did it make you cry? Did it bring back to you a particular memory?
I'll share below.
"K. O. cut Gubber with, 'They all kind of crazy. Some folk drink theyselves to stupid. Others so empty, gluttony take they belly hostage. And some get so full up with hate, it like to crack they soul. Hell, ain't nothing strange when Colored go crazy. Strange is when we don't.'"
This quote says many things to me. In this quote, references of both religion and race are made. K.O. mentions alcoholism, gluttony and hate. All of which are dimmed sins in most religions. He then makes note of being "Colored" and indirectly, what it means to be "Colored" in Liberty, TX. Though this quote is said in a time 50 years ago, much of it still applies to today. Many people we know and don't know struggle with addictions, loneliness and extreme bitterness. Today, we are made to believe that it has become a commonality, especially in the "Colored" community.

ReplyDeleteMa Tante was talking to Ruby and Ephram. That really made me sad. It is a shame that there are not many people who help others now days. It makes me think about the saying that nothing in life is free. I love helping others, but in today's world, not many people are willing to hep without wanting something in return. On the other hand, when someone is genuine in helping, not many people are open to that help.

ReplyDeleteMa Tante told this to Ruby. This really made me think about how we view the world. We hardly ever look at the colors of the rainbow in its beauty. We often just focus on the black and white of the world. We miss out on the beauty as God has placed it in the world. That is a bit depressing.
"The magical thing about Ephram Jennings was that if you looked real hard, you could see a circle of violet rimming the brown of his irises. Soft like the petals of spreading periwinkle. The problem was that no one, not even his sister, took the time to really look at Ephram Jennings." page 6-7
ReplyDeleteThis isn't really a quote but it stuck out most to be because as I began to read more and more of the story I really felt an attachment to Ephram. He has a genuine spirit and it's really sad that no one really takes the time to get to know him or notice his uniqueness. He seems to be one of those people in this world that have so much to offer if someone would take the time to notice.

DeleteAfter reading about Celia's cake, it really had me wanting to look up a recipe for Angel food cake. Knowing I can't bake though!!
He handed her his jacket and said, "Interestind you asked 'bout that ox. It's what Jesus say to the Pharisee when they give him a hard time 'bout healing a man on the Sabbath. Jesus say, if your ox fall in a pit, whatever the day, you'd fetch him out. If it's important enough you got to do it."
ReplyDeleteThis quote is noteworthy because this is where Ephram acknowledges that he is there to save Ruby. Ephram also makes a great point here. He reminded me that no excuses should be given. If it is important, no excuse like the day of the week or other minor circumstances or sacrifices should matter.

At this moment, I recognized that Ruby had a clear understanding of the world around her. A new maturity about Ruby is introduced here.
This quote also gives an image of the lense that Black women are forced to look through in this present day.
